As dissertation editors, we understand how easy it is for sources to “slip through the cracks” during successive drafts of your chapters, particularly your literature review. Even for the most organized researchers using bibliographic systems, it’s inevitable that a source no longer in your written draft lingers in your full reference list–or that a new source you found later in the process gets a proper citation in your writing but not in your bibliography.

Double-checking your in-text citations and references is an especially detailed step in the dissertation editing process, and particularly for our clients on a deadline, it’s one we’re happy to take off your hands. As a result, as part of our dissertation editing service, not only will we ensure proper reference and citation formatting per APA editing guidelines (or whatever style guide you may be required to follow), we will also check every reference to ensure it meets your school’s specific age requirements.

We can go through your entire dissertation and identify any “missing links” between your in-text citations and full reference list–and, in most cases, identify and add the missing citation information to your reference list (or, alternately, remove outdated or “leftover” citations or sources from earlier drafts that were missed during earlier dissertation editing). Common examples of issues requiring a full reference audit include:

  • Citations in the body of the text without corresponding information in reference list
  • Reference listings that are never cited in the dissertation or thesis chapters
  • Misspellings or misordered lists of authors’ names or years
  • Missing volume, issue, or publisher information for full reference listings
  • Missing DOI or url information
  • Incomplete information for book chapters, online sources, or other “tricky” entries in APA editing

We respect the confidentiality of your project and will, at your request, supply you with a Non-Disclosure Agreement before discussing specifics.

To ensure we’re able to use our expertise for all of our dissertation consulting clients, regardless of discipline or topic, we have access to multiple major research libraries, giving us full-text access to hundreds of major journals and databases, including JSTOR, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and many others. This access allows us to help you fill in the gaps if your references are missing information such as place of publication or volume number.

In addition to this full reference audit support, one of the most common forms of assistance we provide to our dissertation consulting clients is to update older references used in the body of the work. Many of our clients are part-time students with full-time jobs who work on their dissertations for well over a year. With most universities’ implementation of a general rule requiring references no more than 4-5 years old in the literature review, those time lags can result in the presence of older references that can prevent final dissertation approval.

If you’ve finished your dissertation or thesis writing and are finding your approval is delayed due to out-of-date sources, we can absolutely assist you in identifying and updating your literature review and discussion section as needed. Just contact us for a free initial review!
